ChatGPT Shopping: product feeds, carousels and ecommerce ads (2026)

For online stores, ChatGPT became a real acquisition channel in 2026, with two doors in: organic shopping results, which ChatGPT picks on its own, and product ads, which you pay for. Both now rest on the same foundation: a clean product feed. Here is how it works and where to start.

Key takeaways

  • Organic and paid are two separate systems: you can appear in shopping results without spending a cent.
  • Shopping results increasingly rely on product feeds: about 65% of tracked recommendations on September 3, 2026, according to Profound.
  • On the paid side, product feed campaigns generate ads automatically from your catalog (up to 1 million SKUs), using the same file format as Google Merchant Center.
  • Since August, sponsored product carousels; since September, a Shopify app that saves you from building the feed by hand.

Organic or sponsored: two distinct systems

When a user asks “which trail shoes for a beginner?”, ChatGPT can show products in its answer. OpenAI is explicit: these results are selected independently and are neither ads nor influenced by partnerships. Ads appear below the answer, labelled as sponsored.

The same product can therefore appear on both sides, and you do not need to pay to appear in organic results.

Why the product feed became essential

Until summer 2026, ChatGPT mostly found products by browsing the web. According to a Profound analysis of more than 1.7 million prompt runs, the share of recommendations sourced from product feeds jumped from 8% to 62% around July 10, overtook web search in August, and reached about 65% in early September.

The impact was brutal: of 687 tracked merchants, 450 lost at least a third of their visibility within a week, and the number of cited merchants fell by more than 20%. Shopify and Etsy catalogs are already integrated; other merchants apply at chatgpt.com/merchants.

Required feed fields

According to the spec as checked in September 2026, every feed row needs nine fields:

  • item_id (unique identifier), title, description
  • url of the product page, image_url
  • brand and seller_name
  • price and availability

Product ads: how they work

Launched in May 2026, product feed campaigns work like Performance Max or Meta catalog campaigns: you connect your catalog, filter eligible products, and the system generates ads from names, images and attributes. OpenAI accepts the same file you send to Google Merchant Center. New partners first submit a 100-product sample.

Ecommerce advertising on ChatGPT in 2026

1
May: campaigns generated automatically from the product feed
2
August: carousels of several products from one merchant
3
September: ChatGPT Ads app for Shopify (US on the 16th, other markets on the 23rd)
4
September: bulk product campaign creation from a spreadsheet

The product carousel

Spotted by Digiday in early August, the carousel shows several products from one merchant in a single ad slot. The system, not the advertiser, decides between a single-product ad and a carousel. Agencies interviewed see it as direct preparation for the holiday season: OpenAI wants products discoverable in ChatGPT before Q4.

Where to start

ChatGPT ecommerce checklist

Do

  • Make sure your Google Merchant Center feed is complete
  • On Shopify: install the ChatGPT Ads app as soon as it is available in your country
  • Write useful descriptions (use, dimensions, materials)
  • Test product campaigns on your best sellers

Avoid

  • Relying only on classic web SEO
  • Sending a feed with stale prices or stock
  • Launching the whole catalog at once with no filter
  • Judging before 3–4 weeks of delivery

Where Perroly fits

Perroly does not manage product feeds. It helps with everything around the sale: scheduling product content on Instagram, TikTok and other networks from the Publishing module, running Meta and Google campaigns from the Ads module, and automatically answering product questions in DMs with messaging automations.
